RCAF Hornets visit Volkel AB,  17 March 2015

For the first time in more than twenty years two CF-188 Hornets of the Royal Canadian Air Force visited Volkel AB. The last time we saw Canadian Hornets at this base was during Exercise Volkit '92.

The Canadian Armed Forces have deployed a number of personnel in Central and Eastern Europe. Operation 'Reassurance' refers to the military activities undertaken by CAF to support NATO assurance measures through the provision of military capabilities for training, exercises, demonstrations and assigned NATO tasks. Canada is a strong supporter of NATO and is committed to doing its part as a member of the alliance. In coordination with its NATO partners, Canada is continually looking for opportunities to contribute to peace and stability in Central and Eastern Europe.

Operation 'Reassurance' started in May 2014 with the arrival of six CF-188 Hornets at Câmpia Turzii, Romania as part of Air Task Force Romania. Personnel trained with allies in the areas of air defence, air superiority, aerospace testing and evaluation, and tactical support.

After their deployment in Romania the Air Task Force participated in the NATO Baltic Air Policing mission from September to December 2014 as was based in Siauliai, Lithuania. ATF Lithuania included approximately 135 personnel, four CF-188 Hornets along with a mission support element. The Baltic Air Policing mission was handed over by Portugal and Canada to Italy and Poland respectively. The ATF continued to actively support the Baltic Air Policing operations until January 5th 2015 to ensure continuity of operation and to support NATO allies and security partners in the interim transition period. While participating in the Baltic Air Policing, the ATF worked with NATO allies and responded to any intrusions of Baltic air space. NATO's Air Policing mission is purely defensive.

There are currently four CF-188 Hornets from 425 Sqn CFB Bagotville, Que, along with RCAF personnel and other equipment, deployed in Spangdahlem, Germany to maintain a Canadian presence in the region in support of NATO allies and partner nations. The CF-188 is Canada's frontline multi-role fighter, and its pilots are trained perform air defence, air superiority, training and tactical support missions. Two of these four Hornets visited Volkel AB after another successful training sortie with RNLAF F-16s.
